Swag Bucks - Get PAID to surf the web!

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Some of you may remember my little post where I talked a little about Swag Bucks… well I am here to help any of you with questions. Also, I wanted to do this post so I can refer to this post when people ask me what all the Swag Bucks business is about. :)

What is Swag Bucks? You can get FREE stuff just for surfin’ the web and using the Swag Bucks search engine! Sound too good to be true? Well, it is TRUE! ;) How fabulous is that?! Simply by changing over to using the Swag Bucks search engine, you could earn free stuff - like Amazon gift cards (my fave prize). Swag Bucks will randomly reward you as you use their search engine. You are rewarded with virtual dollars that can be redeemed for awesome prizes in their Swag Store. It’s FUN and EASY and FREE! When you sign up, you’ll get 30 Swag Bucks to start!

How do I win Swag Bucks? The main way to earn SBs is to earn them while searching. Just switch from Google (or whatever search engine you use) over to the SB search engine and you’ll be winning in no time! You will not win on every search - the wins are random. I generally win about 2-3 times per day and win any amount from 5 to 50 SBs (you can win bigger amounts, but I haven’t won any amount over 50 yet). Sometimes rather than typing a web address into my browser (places I go every now and then but aren’t in my bookmarks), I’ll search for the website first and get to the site that way (i.e. rather than typing in www.gap.com to get to GAP, I will search “gap” and follow the link from the search results). I win quite often by doing that!

You can also earn SBs by finding Swag Codes. Codes are put out about once a day (sometimes more). Codes can be found on their blog, Twitter, Facebook page, in the Swidget, toolbar, or newsletter. The EASIEST way to find out when a Swag Code is out is to fan Coupons and Freebies Mom on Facebook - if you sign onto FB frequently. They will alert you when a code is out. Each swag code is only available for a limited time and is usually only active a couple hours.

You can also earn a little each day by having their toolbar installed - plus having it installed will help you search for things quickly when you need to! Another part of my daily routine is to go through the NOSOs (no obligation special offers) on their Special Offers page. I just hit skip/next/no thanks on all of them and at the end earn a SB. You can also answer their daily poll for 1 SB/day. AND if you merely visit the “Trusted Surveys” page, you’ll also earn 1 SB each day! All four of these (toolbar, NOSOs, poll, and trusted surveys) add up to 4 SBs per day. But getting them every day certainly helps and it only takes a minute to earn those!

A fun way to earn a little extra is to check out their Shop & Earn section if you’ve got some shopping to do online. I do NOT shop in order to earn more SBs - but I do like earning SBs for shopping I was going to do anyway! You can earn 2 SBs for every dollar you spend at a Shop & Earn store! Stores that I shop at every so often and are in the Shop & Earn section are: Payless Shoes, The Children’s Place (WOOT!!!), Walmart, Target, iTunes, etc. There are lots of other good stores like Aeropostale, Macy’s, and Banana Republic. You can even book your next vacation through a place like Expedia and earn SBs since they are in the Shop  Earn section! You must use the link from SBs to get to the store, or you won’t get credit (and it takes like a month for the SBs to credit to your account). I shop at The Children’s Place and Target online quite often as I live in a small town where Walmart is practically the only retailer. I love to hit up the sale section at The Children’s Place every couple months and now that I can earn SBs by doing shopping I was going to do anyways makes it even sweeter! ;)

How much can I earn each month? This varies a lot. The first month that I did Swag Bucks, I earned enough SBs to redeem $15 in Amazon GCs. Not too shabby for just switching my search engine, right?! I was THRILLED! Then I learned the power of REFERRALS! If you refer someone using your referral link, you will receive SBs each time your referral(s) win SBs by searching (you won’t receive matching SBs when a referral gets a swag code - only wins from searches). You will receive matching SBs up to 1,000 SBs PER referral! So, if you aren’t signed up yet, I’d LOVE if you used my referral link! Not only will you be winning free stuff, but you’ll be helping me out too! ;) Then make sure you spread the word and get your friends to sign up with your referral link so you can earn BIG!

I started picking up referrals a few weeks after I started using Swag Bucks. It took me about a week and a half without referrals to earn enough SBs for a $5 Amazon GC, but now I earn about 200-250 SBs PER DAY with all my referrals! I currently have about 13 active referrals (and about 21 who aren’t active). Imagine how quickly that adds up with $5 GCs only costing 450 SBs each! ;) You are, however, limited to only redeeming any prize up to 5 times per month. So, I can only redeem five $5 Amazon GCs each month, then I have to wait until I have enough SBs to snag a $25 or $50 GC.

Can I use more than one Amazon GC on a purchase in the Amazon store? YES!!! Around the 1st and 17th of each month, your gift cards will be posted to you SBs account. You take the GC code and input it into your Amazon account. You can stack these GCs in your account until you’ve got enough to buy whatever you like from Amazon! You can even use the GC balance to cover the cost of shipping if you need to! COOL BEANS!

Can EVERYONE use Swag Bucks? Unfortunately, no. Right now I believe it’s only available to residents in the US, Canada, and UK. I don’t think UK residents can snag the Amazon GCs though. :( Canadians can snag the Amazon GCs - for Amazon.com OR Amazon.ca. Right now the Amazon.com GCs say that they are “available to US and Canadian residents only.“  EDIT: There is now a Amazon.co.uk gift card in the Swag Store!

That’s all I can think of right now. If you have a question, please post a comment! I’d be happy to answer it and may even include it in this post! :) You can also check out the FAQs at Swag Bucks to learn more!

Now go forth and search the web - and win free stuff! :D ;)

NOTE: This post contains my referral link to Swag Bucks - but I wouldn’t recommend something I didn’t love! :D

Free groceries = awesome | Couponing: My new addiction

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Super couponing - it’s seriously a new hobby of mine. It is ADDICTING and I LOVE IT! Some of you may remember my little blurb about clipping coupons in this post. Well, I’ve had people asking me to teach them, so I am writing up this post so that I can just give out the link to whoever asks and it’ll make my life easier. lol Plus, I’m hoping this info may be useful to some of you too!

I started couponing near the end of March. TOTAL for the last 7 weeks, I have spent $305.55 on groceries (I have a family of 3). This includes all food, toiletries, and household items. That averages to less than $44 PER WEEK. I have SAVED $553.06!! And yes, I do buy fresh meat and produce - which are the most expensive part of my shopping. My goal was to cut our grocery budget down to $200/month and I’ve done it without a problem! Plus, my cupboards and freezer are overflowing… they’ve never been this full!

0512_couponing2

1. Myth - But all the coupons are for junk food: FALSE! One of the first things people say when they hear about couponing is, “But I don’t buy that stuff so it wouldn’t be worth it to me.” Yes, a lot of coupons are for junk food you might never buy, but I think a lot of us buy:

  • Shampoo, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, and other toiletries
  • Household cleaners, laundry detergent, dish detergents, etc.
  • Ziploc bags and other storage
  • Pasta and pasta sauce
  • Snacks and juice for our kiddos
  • Cereal
  • Canned goods (a lot is for our food storage for emergency preparedness - I prefer fresh or good frozen veggies)

So, that excuse doesn’t really fly with me. You can still save a ton on things you DO buy. There aren’t coupons for stuff like produce and fresh meat - but if you start shopping like a couponer, you only pick those things up when they’re on a great sale. I buy lean ground beef at no more than $1.99/lb. and buy lots - then freeze in 1 lb. portions. I don’t just buy any produce I want anymore - I try to plan our meals around what’s on sale.

2. Myth - It’s cheaper to just buy generic and not use my coupons: FALSE! I used to shop generic too. Now I get the good stuff for SOOO cheap and even FREE! I even get to shop at Safeway now instead of Walmart… I LOVE Safeway. Plus my Safeway multiplies all coupons to $1 right now - so that means that even a 25¢ coupon is like a dollar in my pocket! PLUS, you don’t just go and buy stuff anytime with that coupon, you wait until it goes on a great sale… and imagine how fun it is when hand soap is on sale for a dollar and you have a coupon that will be worth a dollar off?!?! It’s FREE!! ;) You can even use a manufacturer coupon on top of a store coupon! For example - last week Ziploc brand freezer bags were $1.50 with a store coupon in the Safeway ad. I also had a manufacturer coupon for 40¢ off - which Safeway multiplied to $1 off. I got freezer bags for 50¢!!

3. I don’t have time to clip coupons: I do not spend that much time prepping for a shopping trip… I was actually quite surprised when I started clipping coupons. I subscribe to blogs like The Krazy Coupon Lady and I am part of Coupon$ense. I don’t have to track down the deals myself… they tell me when stuff is on sale and what coupons match up and where to find them. So I just decide what deals I like, go clip my coupons, print out my shopping list (Coupon$ense makes it really easy for me) then GO! I know exactly what I’m getting before I go into the store and this saves me time at the grocery store. No standing and debating which brand of food to buy because I already know what to get and how much it is going to cost me. Ask my husband - he doesn’t mind dropping by the store anymore because I’ll only be there for like 10 minutes tops (I used to take at least a half hour). Subscribing to Coupon$ense isn’t really a necessity for anyone, I just like that it saves me time, plus I’m in a non-delivery zone for the newspaper (ahhhhh the joys of living in the middle of nowhere) and they send me coupons by mail cheaper than I could buy them online each week.

Some couponers do spend a lot of time by going to multiple stores for different deals. I don’t do this. I only have a Safeway, Basha’s, Walmart, and Walgreens anyway (small town). If you hit up every store for every deal - yeah, you’ll spend a lot of time and energy on it. BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO! I pretty much only shop at Safeway and score plenty of amazing deals. I am going to try and pick up Walgreens this month so I can get some better deals on toiletries and household items, but even only doing Safeway, I have significantly cut my grocery budget!

4. Coupon sources:

  • The Sunday paper: You need the weekly coupons from the Sunday newspaper and you need to get multiple copies - at least 3 copies, but I like having 4. See if you can find a discounted rate for buying multiple copies. For Arizonans, if you subscribe to Coupon$ense, they can offer you a subscription to the Arizona Republic for a great rate - $2 for the first Sunday paper and $1 for each additional. If you have family, friends, or church buddies who get the Sunday paper - ask them if you can have their inserts. Tons of people just throw out their inserts or only use a few of the coupons (so sad…lol). Some dollar stores also sell the newspaper - but make sure you check that the inserts are inside before you buy them. NOTE on multiple coupons: some stores - including my Safeway - go by the “like 3″ rule. They will only accept 3 copies of the same coupon in a single transaction. But you can use your other copies in a different transaction or different shopping trip.
  • Load e-coupons to your store card: You can load coupons directly onto your Safeway/Fry’s card (or others) at Safeway, Cellfire, and Shortcuts. What’s really magical about these is that you can use them IN ADDITION to a manufacturer coupon. Yeah. Awesome. They will automatically come off your card when you swipe it at the register and if you had more than one “copy” of the same coupon loaded, they will both come off (sometimes the same coupon is listed on two of those sites and you can load both of them and they will BOTH come off even if you didn’t buy 2 items). Oh, and a little tip - you must use your actual CARD and not just your telephone number that is linked to the card. I learned that the hard way. lol
  • Internet printables: There are tons of coupons to print online. KCL and C$ tell me where they are so I don’t even have to hunt them down! These are considered manufacturer coupons as well (can’t be stacked with a paper coupon). You can usually print each coupon 2x per computer (after the first prints, hit the back button on your browser and it will print again). I have 2 computers - so sometimes I’ll print 4 copies! You cannot scan/copy these coupons to get more - that is fraud! If you need more copies and you don’t have more than one computer, hop on over to a friend/family member’s house if they’ll let you!

5. Catalinas make shopping even sweeter: Catalinas are coupons that print at the register when you buy participating products. These are like cash toward your next purchase. Most Catalinas are for $$ off your next shopping order and can usually be used to purchase ANYTHING. For example, today I bought 4 boxes of Kellogg’s cereal (which were on sale and I also had coupons for, of course) and earned a $3 Catalina at checkout. I can use that $3 on anything on my next shopping order and I can use it on top of using other coupons. At Safeway, you can “roll” those Catalinas (use the Catalina to purchase the same items a second time in a different transaction and then earn yet another Catalina). On KCL they always keep an updated list of the current Catalinas for specific stores. Click on the store you’re interested, then click on Catalinas and you’ll find them. But they usually make it easier on you and list the Catalinas corresponding to coupon matchups from the stores weekly ad. Easy peasy!

Want more info for beginners?! I think that The Krazy Coupon Lady has it all broken down in an easy to understand format (with lots more info). So visit her 10 Days to Become a KCL posts to read up more!

I’ll just leave you with my score for today… I paid $1.10 total on this trip and earned $4 in Catalinas AND I’ll be submitting a $5 rebate since that Scrubbing Bubbles cleaner completes the requirements for a SC Johnson rebate! I made money on this trip! WOOT!! Yeah, the Dr. Pepper is half empty and it wasn’t a good deal - regular price - but I was thirsty and I needed a “filler” so that my Catalinas were used up so Safeway didn’t “owe me” money at the end. ;) hehe

0512_couponing

I made money by taking home:

  • 2 boxes of Cocoa Krispies
  • 2 boxes of Rice Krispies
  • 1 box of Capri Sun Sunrise
  • 1 pepper grinder
  • 1 bottle of Scrubbing Bubbles Extend-A-Clean refill (I have 4 of the starters already)
  • and a Dr. Pepper

Dave Ramsey, Budgets, & Coupons (OH MY!)

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Any Dave Ramsey fans out there? At New Year’s I made a goal to get better control over our finances and get out of debt. I bought Dave’s The Total Money Makeover and read it… and quickly decided that he had a GOOD plan! The guy gives it to ya straight. I love it! I like to listen to his radio show online and watch his TV show on Hulu… it helps keep me motivated. For the first time since I’ve been married, we have a plan for our future and we have planned out every dollar that we earn. We’re actually BUDGETING! EEEP! If you feel like you live paycheck to paycheck… if you have ANY debt… if you want a REAL plan to get out of debt and save and build wealth… GET HIS BOOK! :)

And along the lines of budgeting… I purchased the You Need a Budget Software. I loooooooooooovvvveeeeee it. Seriously. I do! Before I was using an Excel spreadsheet… and it was lame. I love how YNAB helps me save for future purchases/bills without actually having to transfer that money into a special savings account. It is especially helpful for preparing for bills that come only every few months or once or twice a year (like car insurance and such).

To help us in our Total Money Makeover, I decided to start using coupons to cut down our grocery bill. What a lot of people think is that it’s just cheaper not to use coupons and buy the store brand… NOT TRUE!! Couponers combine coupons with sales and sometimes stack coupons and sales on top of store coupons… getting stuff for cheap and FREE! And you stock up on that stuff so you don’t have to run out to the store to get something you need for dinner that night and end up paying full price for it.  Since I started couponing, I have saved 60-75% off every shopping trip. It’s like a rush and I thoroughly enjoy it. How dorky am I? haha! Plus it allows me to shop at Safeway instead of Walmart… and I try to avoid Walmart at all costs.

I was hesistant to do the couponing thing… I’m a busy woman and I didn’t think I’d have the time to search through ads and coupons and try and match them up. Buuuuuut I read blogs like The Krazy Coupon Lady (read their KCL 101… it helps A LOT) and they alert me to awesome coupon matchups. Annnnnd I subscribe to Coupon$ense. I especially love C$ because it allows me to login and see what’s on super sale and add it to my shopping list, then I just print it out and it gives me the list of coupons I need to clip (and where to find them) and bring with me to the store! They are based in Arizona, but people in other states can check and see if they have stores for your area too by putting in your ZIP code on the sign up page.

This was my very first couponing trip ever… I spent $15.75 and walked out with $11.50 in “catalinas” to use on my next purchase. Isn’t that the coolest?!

img_1628

In another attempt to be thrifty, I signed up for Swagbucks (that is an affiliate link). Swagbucks is TOTALLY legitimate. Essentially, you earn swagbucks just for using their search engine. Then you can redeem those swagbucks for prizes in their Swag Store… and I always snag the $5 Amazon GCs. Then I stack those Amazon GCs in my Amazon account. I signed up last month and I have already earned $20 in Amazon GCs. I decided to see how many I can earn before Christmas and try and do my Christmas shopping with the GCs I earn through Swagbucks! Christmas gifts for free… I’m excited! ;) hehe! Just search the web like you usually do, but use the SB search engine instead and you’ll randomly win SBs! (You don’t win on every search, it’s completely random) You can also earn more SBs by finding swag codes and entering them into your account. If you’re on Facebook, fan Engineer a Debt Free Life and they will alert you when a swag code is out and tell you where to find it or where to find the clue! You can also earn an additional 1-3 SBs PER DAY just by having their toolbar installed. Learn more about it here!

Anyways, I am totally lovin’ Dave Ramsey, budgeting, coupons, and Swagbucks. I just want to share the info for any others wanting it! :D
